700 Years of history: The Ferro Family, HISTORICAL GLASSMAKERS

The Ferro family, after the terrible plague of 1630 that decimated the local population, including the skilled glass blowers, the Ferro family moved to Murano and soon found themselves numbered among the local notables as Members for the island in the Council of the Republic of Venice, occupying this prestigious position for 27 times during the eighteenth century. Belonging to the energetic and productive local elite, the Ferro family became Gastaldi Maggiori of the St. Nicholas School, which includes masters and master glassmakers and glasswork managers. Also, their coat of arms appeared twice on the Oselles, medals used as money that the Venetian Mint coined specifically to commemorate the Murano Community. As if to represent their dual nature, the coat of arms of the Ferro family consists of an anchor - symbol of stability and link with the territory - and a comet - indispensable tool for travelling and adventure by sea – .The masters Ferro descended from them, who founded the Ferro furnaces, still active in Murano.
